Common Causes of Dental Emergencies & Treatments
Don't suffer in silence. Time is critical to saving your tooth.
Dental emergencies often happen without warning. Understanding the cause of your pain is the first step toward relief. We specialize in treating complex cases to save your natural teeth whenever possible.
Severe Tooth Infection (Abscess)
An abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection at the root of the tooth. Symptoms include severe throbbing pain, facial swelling, fever, and a bad taste in the mouth. This is a life-threatening condition if the infection spreads.
Treatment: We may prescribe antibiotics to manage the infection, followed by Root Canal Therapy to drain the abscess and save the tooth. If the tooth is non-restorable, a surgical extraction may be necessary.
Action: Call us immediately. Do not apply heat to the area.
Deep Cavities & Decay
When tooth decay penetrates the enamel and reaches the soft nerve pulp inside, it causes excruciating sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures or spontaneous pain.
Treatment: Depending on the depth of the decay, we will remove the decay or perform a Root Canal to remove the infected nerve and place a filling or Crown to strengthen the tooth. In less severe cases, a large composite filling may suffice.
Action: Rinse with warm water and book an appointment online to prevent further damage.
Cracked or Broken Tooth
Trauma, grinding your teeth (bruxism), or biting down on hard foods can fracture a tooth. A vertical root fracture or a split tooth can expose the nerve, causing sharp pain when chewing.
Treatment: If the crack is minor, dental bonding or a crown can restore the tooth. If the crack extends below the gum line or into the pulp, a Root Canal or Extraction followed by a dental implant may be required.
Action: If the tooth is broken, gather the pieces and call us immediately.
Failed Root Canal Treatment
Occasionally, a previously treated tooth may not heal properly or can become reinfected months or years later due to new decay or complex canal anatomy.
Treatment: We perform Endodontic Retreatment. This involves removing the old filling material, cleaning the canals again using advanced microscopy, and resealing the tooth. In some cases, an Apicoectomy (microsurgery) is needed.
Action: Do not ignore pain in a previously treated tooth. Book an appointment online.
Knocked-Out Tooth
A tooth that has been completely dislodged due to sports injury or an accident is a time-critical emergency.
Treatment: The tooth can often be re-implanted and splinted if seen within 30 to 60 minutes. Root canal therapy will likely be needed afterward.
Action: Keep the tooth moist (in milk or inside your cheek). Call us immediately—do not wait!

Toothache Home Care Guide: Managing Pain and Seeking Relief
When experiencing a toothache at home, there are several options to alleviate discomfort and promote healing. Over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain, while rinsing with warm salt water can reduce inflammation.
However, home remedies are only temporary. If your toothache is accompanied by swelling, fever, or signs of infection, professional care is required immediately.
