Your Maryland Healthy Smiles Benefits Explained
Effective January 2023, Maryland Medicaid expanded dental coverage to include all adults (21+). As a Maryland Healthy Smiles provider, we follow the Maryland Department of Health guidelines to ensure you get the maximum benefit from your plan.
Preventive & Diagnostic (No Approval Needed)
These services are available to keep your teeth healthy and catch problems early:
- Comprehensive Exams: One every 6 months.
- X-Rays: Bitewings, periapicals, and panoramic X-rays as needed for diagnosis.
- Cleanings (Prophylaxis): Two cleanings per year (one every 6 months) to prevent gum disease.
- Fluoride Treatment: Covered for adults and children to strengthen enamel.
Restorative & Surgical (Treatment for Pain/Decay)
We provide these treatments to fix damaged teeth and relieve pain:
- Fillings: Both silver (amalgam) and white (composite) fillings are covered for cavities on all teeth.
- Extractions: Simple and surgical removal of non-restorable teeth, including wisdom teeth if medically necessary.
- Emergency Care: Immediate treatment for severe pain, swelling, or trauma is always covered.
Major Services (Prior Authorization Required)
Some advanced procedures are covered but require pre-approval from Maryland Healthy Smiles. Our office handles all the paperwork for you:
- Root Canal Therapy: Covered for front and back teeth (incisors, premolars, and molars) to save a tooth from infection. Limited to one per lifetime per tooth.
- Dental Crowns: Covered for teeth that have had a root canal or have extensive decay. Coverage is limited to one crown per tooth every 5 years (60 months).
- Deep Cleaning (Periodontal Scaling): For patients with gum disease, covered once every 24 months per quadrant with prior approval.

What is NOT Covered by Maryland Medicaid?
While the Maryland Healthy Smiles program is very comprehensive, there are specific exclusions mandated by the state. It is important to know these limitations:
- Dental Implants: Implants are not a covered benefit.
- Cosmetic Dentistry: Procedures like teeth whitening and veneers are considered cosmetic and are not covered.
- New Dentures for Adults: While Maryland Healthy Smiles covers denture adjustments, the fabrication of new full or partial dentures for adults (21+) is currently not covered.
- Adult Braces: Orthodontics is typically only covered for children under 21 with a severe, handicapping malocclusion.
